On the 30th of May 2022, Behdad Eghbali, Todd Boehly and the Boehly-Clearlake Consortium officially took over control of Chelsea Football Club and a new era began for the team from West London. Initially, a great sense of excitement and anticipation befell the blue side of London after the American owners splashed the cash in the summer of ’22. The free-willed spending of such large amounts of money raised eyebrows all across the footballing world and the expectations for the season ahead were sky high with Champions League winning coach Thomas Tuchel. However, nobody could have predicted the mess that was to come.
After just six Premier League matches of the new season, Head Coach (Thomas Tuchel) was shockingly sacked by the Chelsea hierarchy with the club sat in sixth place, just five points off first. Contrastingly, a miserable Chelsea side now languish in 11th place, 36 points off top spot and just 11 away from the relegation zone. The Blues have been eliminated in both domestic cup competitions at just the third round and a recent Champions League demolition job from Real Madrid ended any hope that the club and their fans had of achieving anything this season.
Despite a horrific season, by the London side’s lofty ambitions, is there a shining light at the end of a dark tunnel? One man who will certainly be hoping to turn Chelsea’s luck around will be Frank Lampard, the new interim manager until the end of the season. The Blue’s legend and top goal scorer gave his thoughts on the Blue’s current squad and their outstanding potential, “I know there is a lot of talent in this squad, I am excited to work with that talent and help them. That’s why I’m here.”. Lampard’s message of the side’s ‘potential’ is fitting considering the affinity that the word has with the club in recent times, this is due to the club’s core of young, talented players including January signings; Mykhailo Mudryk (22), Noni Madeuke (21) and not least £105 million superstar Enzo Fernandez (22). So even after a troubling and tumultuous season for Chelsea fans there is a still a large beacon of hope for following seasons and especially when the club are being linked with as experienced a coach as former Champion’s League finalist Mauricio Pochettino!
Whilst, the upcoming end to the season cannot come soon enough for the Chelsea faithful and the current mood around Stamford Bridge is one of apathy and anger, the future is bright and a lot can happen in one manic footballing summer. All hope is not lost for the Blues, but fans may have to be a little patient.
