Controversial tree safety works in an ancient Wiltshire wood have been halted after High Court action was taken by a local community group.
Bradford on Avon Town Council has agreed to stop work pending the outcome of mediation talks with the Friends of Becky Addy Wood, who obtained an injunction two weeks ago.
In a statement, the town council said: “Following the High Court’s decision to impose a temporary injunction, the town council has halted tree safety work in Becky Addy Wood.
“The temporary injunction was granted on a ‘without notice basis’ and the town council was not represented in court.
“The town council’s primary responsibility as a landowner is public safety and the health of Becky Addy Wood in the long term.
“We are looking forward to defending our sensitive approach to the management of Becky Addy Wood.”
At its full council meeting on January 10, it was disclosed the town council has so far spent £25,528 on the tree works, surveys, security and fencing.
It is budgeting to spend a further £2,500 on completing the works, which it says are necessary to ensure public safety.
