Marlborough high street has been named one of the best in the country by a leading national newspaper.

The Guardian listed the Wiltshire town in the top ten of the country's best independent high streets in Britain.

In the article written by Annabelle Thorpe, she describes the town in glowing fashion.

"A jumble of Tudor buildings, historic merchants’ houses and Georgian mansions create a charming backdrop to an array of independent stores and boutiques, scattered along one of the country’s widest high streets," it reads.

Wiltshire Times:

Other places that made the Guardian’s top 10 include Cardigan, Hebden Bridge, Broadway, St Ives, Wigtown, Stockbridge, Ludlow and Lewes.

Roman Argent, who works at the Green Dragon Pub in the town agreed with the assessment.

“I’ve lived for 19 years and I love it, there seems to be more independent businesses popping up every hour," he said.

“A lot of tourism that we would get in the pub, is usually the people that are wanting to see the high street."

Another pub, the Wellington Arms, hailed the town's draw as big of their trade.

Team leader Emma Prior said: “It’s a really nice high street to work on, everyone is so lovely, it’s a welcoming place, everyone knows everyone.

“I’ve only been here for a few weeks, but from what I can see already is, I am going to enjoy being here.

“Everyone has been so welcoming, people want to know you and look out for you.

“The atmosphere and the buildings themselves and what they have done with the Christmas decorations, it’s just fantastic.”

Marlborough Town Council launched a survey in September and October with 480 residents giving rave reviews of the town.

In the survey results, over 75 per cent of people agreed that the town has beautiful buildings, areas of outstanding natural beauty, open spaces, parks and play areas, a vibrant feel during the day and a wide variety of food /drink outlets.

But 68 per cent also wanted better access to the town centre via public transport and 57 per cent of people wanted a safer environment for cyclists.

The town council will also look to improve the high streets even more by applying to the Wiltshire Towns programme.

£1 million will be invested in the county’s high streets and town centre until 2025.

MTC wants to apply for the money as it looks to improve the town, this includes adding more public seating to open spaces, and improving signage and tourist information.
