FAMILY salon Hair Design By Martine is celebrating its 50th year in business in Corsham.

Margaret Joyce and her husband Martin founded the business in the former Goughs broom factory shop in 1972 in Pickwick Road.

The couple built a house on the site of the brush factory shop in 1975 and moved the salon next door.

Their daughter, Martine Bancroft, joined her mum in the salon in 2005 and has run the business since her mum retired in 2015. Margaret died, aged 69, in 2017.

“Margaret was really pleased when Martine came into the business,” said Martin, 74, who still works as a bricklayer. “She loved having her in the salon to bounce off.”

Martine said the salon has moved with the times and keeps up with all the modern styles. “I still have one of mum’s original customers coming in though."

Martin said Margaret is remembered as a fun-loving character. “What you saw is what you got with Margaret. She loved being in the salon and having a good time.

“She was a very good hairdresser who was sought after and it’s a lovely tribute to her that the salon is still going strong 50 years later.”
