Jordan Smith and Laurie Canter miss cut as Shane Lowry wins BMW PGA at Wentworth

Neither Chippenham's Smith nor Cumberwell Park's Canter managed to make the cut as Shane Lowry beat Rory McIlroy with a birdie on 18 to lift the DP World Tour's most iconic event.

Following a significant amount of rain at the Virginia Water course on Thursday and in the days leading up to the tournament, scoring was low for the majority of the field throughout.

But Smith only managed to negotiate his way around in level par (72) on the opening day while Canter struggled to two-over par.

Friday's play was cancelled as a mark of respect following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, and play resumed on Saturday as the tournament was reduced to 54 holes overall.

While both Wiltshire players fared better on Saturday, a three-under round of 69 was not enough for Smith to make the cut - he missed out on tournament prize money by one shot.

Canter too enjoyed a better day around Wentworth, but his two-under-par round of 70 also saw the LIV Golf International Series participant go home early.

Smith returns to action straight away in the DS Automobiles Italian Open - which is being held at the 2024 Ryder Cup venue of Marco Simone Golf Club.

Meanwhile, Canter will take a week off before teeing it up at the Cazoo Open de France.
