For some children it's not easy to get access to books and computers to complete their homework. Luckily for them Homework Clubs have been set up in the local area to provide materials, equipment and a supportive atmosphere for school-age children.#

Following the success of the Melksham Library Homework Club in 2006, the not-for-profit community organisation Melksham 1st started working with the Wiltshire County Council Library service and residents of Berryfields to set up an out-of-town' club.

Funding was secured from the Local Network Fund (administered by the Wiltshire and Swindon Community Foundation) to start the project and the Berryfield Action Group also gained funding through West Wiltshire District Council.

The Homework Club has proved a real success, giving young people access to computers, books and support to enable them to complete homework tasks effectively.

The club is run on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons during term time by one paid member of staff and volunteers and provides a safe, warm environment for young people to gain help with homework and to research homework through computers.

Over 38 children are registered as attendees and the project has worked due to the commitment of local volunteers, support from local authorities and schools.One volunteer was awarded a Community Award from the High Sherriff of Wiltshire, who visited the club and endorsed its work.

It is hoped that the Berryfields Homework Club will be the first of many in the area and over recent months Melksham 1st has been consulting and publicising the idea of a Homework Club at Bowerhill.

Bowerhill residents have already shown their support and volunteers have come forward to help with the project.The idea can now be progressed and funding can be sought so a new Homework Club can be provided at Bowerhill this year.
