A Chippenham veterinary practice is pushing the message for owners to ‘keep dogs safe at the beach’ over the summer holidays.
Garden Veterinary Groupis warning dog owners of the dangers facing their pets while out walking and playing on the beach this year.
Vets expect to see a number of dogs coming into the veterinary practice in Bristol Road this summer with potentially life-threatening symptoms.
The experts are warning owners to look out for hazards such as jellyfish which could cause a fatal sting, as well as seaweed and washed-up dead animals which dogs could be tempted to eat.
They are also warning owners to always keep sight of their dog when swimming and consider using a dog life jacket to help them stay afloat.
Jane Lovelock, a vet and clinical director of Garden Veterinary Group said: “Dogs really enjoy playing on the beach and having fun on their summer holidays, but you never know what hazards are lurking on the shoreline or under the sand. In previous years we have treated pets that became very unwell after ingesting items on the beach.
“Please keep a close eye on your dogs and contact the practice if you have any concerns.”
