The official opening of Chippenham’s long-awaited climbing centre, The Arc, was a hit over the weekend.

The facility is one of just a few that has been purpose-built in the UK. Inspiration for the design was taken from the likes of the famous Kletterzentrum in Innsbruck.

The Arc facility has been funded by Chippenham Borough Lands Charity with the support of a £100,000 grant from Sports England for the climbing centre and a £200,000 grant from Wiltshire Council for the skatepark.

But the centre took six years to build, due to planning complications and various hurdles caused by lockdowns.

On Saturday, April 9, visitors got the chance to celebrate the opening of The Arc between 12-3 pm.

Visitors got to watch climbing demonstrations on the outside climbing wall and professional skateboarders also joined, showcasing what can be done within the new skatepark facility which adjoins the climbing centre.

A spokesperson for Chippenham Borough Lands Charity said: “What a fantastic day... It was great to see so many people enjoying the climbing centre, skatepark and café in the sunshine.

“A big shout out to Russ, James and the Canvas - Skateparks and Public Spaces team for running the brilliant Arc Jam event on the skatepark - so much local talent on show - and jaw-dropping tricks from pro-skaters, Ryan and Owen.

“It was great to see a constant stream of climbers on the outside wall highlighting this unique facility and to see so many people enjoying tours and climbing in the indoor facilities too. Amazing work The Climbing Academy South West team.”

Almost 100 guests turned up for the occasion, including lots of different people who helped to make the new facility a reality.

Also attending the event was guest speaker, Kenton Cool, who gave an ‘inspiring talk’ according to the charity.

They added: “We wish him all the best for his upcoming challenge to summit Everest for a world breaking 16th time.”

Nina Gizzie, the regional operations manager at the Climbing Academy is hoping that its accessible nature will help people from all walks of life enjoy the facilities.

She said: It’s been an amazing process being able to watch it from afar, using the remote systems as well, and being able to see it being built.

"Being able to see the community of Chippenham come and use it regularly without too much push was really great.”
