The school catering for pupils with special needs, Silverwood has announced that it will be closing tomorrow due to the severe weather warnings that are in place.

The wide Amber Warning that has been issued for Wiltshire has highlighted the ongoing risk of high impacts such as disruption to power, travel and other services.

Headteacher Sean McKeown said: “This decision has not been made lightly, but having spoken to a large number of stakeholders we have decided this is best for everyone’s safety.

“Having taken advice from the Met Office as well as the School Effectiveness Team and Passenger Transport at the Local Authority, we feel that pupils, staff and drivers safety must come first and we do not want to put anybody at risk.”

The school is concerned about possible flying debris which they fear could cause a danger to life, as well as pose a chance of power cuts which could impact their ability to function safely.

Mr Mckeown added: “It is also likely that there will be falling branches and some uprooted trees, which will affect safety at school as well as pose a danger for everyone when travelling to and from school.”

Silverwood’s School Effectiveness Team concluded that mobile classrooms and similar buildings would not be safe to work in, creating a challenge for the school which largely depends on them, with them being dotted around the site.

Mr Mckeown is hoping that things will still run as smoothly as possible despite the circumstances.

He said: “As a result of the decision, we will be providing a blended approach to support children with their education tomorrow.

"Their usual class teachers will be in touch to make sure this happens.”

Lots of people in the county are planning on staying indoors tomorrow following the developing advice from weather experts.

The Met Office has also recently stated: “There has also been a Red Weather Warning issues for wind covering southwest coastal areas of the UK, where the most significant gusts in exposed areas could be over 90mph from early Friday morning.

"Further inland and within the wider Amber Warning area, gusts will still be significant and damaging for many, with 70-80mph gusts possible.

"With such severe weather impacting the UK, people should stay up to date with the latest warnings as they could be updated.”
