An Instagram-famous couple from Westbury is facing an onslaught online for a number racist tweets which have been unearthed.
Social media star Elle Darby, who has an Instagram following of 739,000 has offended many with a stream of racist posts. More than 50 have been identified which discriminate against minorities.
Although they were published ten years ago, it has still caused an outrage across social media platforms and the 26 year-old 'influencer' has since deleted her Twitter account.
One tweet which was published by the ex-Stonar School student read: “I just hate Polish people and Indians really.”
In 2011, Elle wrote: “This bus is sweaty and stinks of Indians.”
In another post, she stated: “Why do foreign people follow me? I don’t speak your grunts, meatheads.”
In yet another post where she again made comments which mocked Polish people, Elle proclaimed: “Watching these Polish people argue on a train is my Saturday night entertainment.”
There were many more posts which continued along the same lines, with regular hateful language, including the use of racial slurs on several occasions.
But Elle is not the only one whose past is catching up with her. Her fiancée Connor Swift has also been accused of posting racist content.
In a tweet from 2012, he said: “Looked like a black man after work, through all the dust I’d collected. #StillLookedHot.”
Influencer disappears from Twitter
Following the backlash on Twitter Elle appears to have deleted her account.
Twitter user ‘fifi1234321’ commented in response to the situation: “If your immediate reaction to this Ella Derby/Connor Swift situation isn’t to unfollow them then you’re facilitating racism. I’ve been a fan for four years and that ended the minute I saw her tweets.”
‘Blixberrie’ noted: “Elle Darby really has an offensive tweet for every single minority group going.”
‘SophieJane96x’ added: “The thing is with these Elle Darby/Connor Swift tweets, it’s not like it’s a single tweet. That would be bad enough. There are continuous and repeated displays of racism towards Black, Indian and Polish people in particular. They shouldn’t be able to come back from this.”
The couple has responded on Instagram with an apology in an attempt to smooth things over.
Elle stated: “These comments are not a reflection of who either of us are as grown adults, nor who we were at the time they were made, and do not align with what we stand for.
“We are beyond angry at ourselves and ashamed that our behaviour will have been hurtful to some of you who have supported our family for so long. We can only wish for your forgiveness.”
Connor also stated on the main feed of his Instagram: “This is the biggest lesson I could ever learn and I want to be held accountable for what I said and hold my hands up and apologise.
"I will not justify my actions and accept full responsibility for this whilst also knowing I will continue to learn, and continue to grow.”
