WILTSHIRE Council is working with at least 20 Afghan families currently staying in a hotel in the county to provide support while they are based in Wiltshire.

It is not known how long the families will need to stay in the hotel while long-term accommodation for them is found.

According to the council, a number of adults and children from Afghanistan were brought to the hotel until more permanent homes in the UK can be found for them.

A spokesman for the council said: “As people move on, more Afghan people could arrive at the hotel.

“The location of the hotel and numbers of Afghan citizens based there is not being shared.”

Those living at the hotel are provided with three meals a day, snacks, a laundry service and transport.

The Home Office is unable to provide day to day support, therefore Wiltshire Council has agreed to provide wraparound support for now and funding will be provided for this from the Home Office.

All the families are being registered with a GP and prior to moving into this hotel everyone had quarantined following arrival.

Council leader, Richard Clewer said: “We are providing support and are currently exploring childcare and education opportunities for the children and any other support that is required. We are working to provide accommodation and support for at least 20 more families under the Afghan resettlement scheme but we await further information from the Home Office to best asses how we can help.”
