SUPERSTORE Waitrose has outlined plans to redevelop the Bath Road car park in Chippenham.
The plans for a supermarket and parking would bring the biggest change to the town since Borough Parade shopping centre was built in 1996.
Waitrose has presented a proposal to officials from North Wiltshire District Council, Wiltshire County Council and the chamber of commerce. The two councils have now revealed that they will be working together to bring a new shop to Chippenham.
Originally the county council had plans to redevelop The Bridge Centre, which is a youth club at the moment, and North Wiltshire District Council had been planning to redevelop the Bath Road car park separately.
Although Waitrose has outlined its plans for the area it is thought that there will be similar presentations from other supermarket chains in the near future.
A spokesman for Waitrose, which is part of the John Lewis Partnership, said: "We are working with our development partner, Discovery Properties, on bringing the Waitrose offer to Chippenham as part of a significant regeneration project for the town centre.
"We believe a Waitrose food shop would help to add to the vibrancy of the area and retain trade within the local business community.
"We are in positive discussions with the local authorities and chamber of commerce. However, these are at an early stage."
The chamber of commerce says that redeveloping the area could kick start the 2020 Vision plan for Chippenham to regenerate the town centre.
