COMMUTERS driving through Bradford on Avon this morning faced delays in passing through the town.
Long queues built up on the B3109 Frome Road to get through the town centre to the A363 Bath Road and the road to Chippenham.
They were caused by temporary traffic lights and roadworks near Masons Lane, the Castle Inn, and Mount Pleasant.
One motorist said: "The town is gridlocked. Drivers are turning round because it's taking so long to get through."
Cllr Sarah Gibson, chairwoman of Wiltshire Council's Community Area Transport Group, said later that it appeared the roadworks were unauthorised.
She added: "It would appear whoever the company was have been working without a permit from the streetworks team.
"They are trying to find out who it was as they can be issued a fine for working without the appropriate permission but as yet haven’t been able to pin down.
"However, the co-ordinator said it looks as though they have now left site as traffic looks to be back to normal on their system."
