A SIXTH form student at Sheldon School in Chippenham has tested positive for the Covid-19 coronavirus and two others are having to self-isolate at home, it was disclosed today.

It is understood this is the first positive case of the virus at the school. Parents, carers and staff have been informed.

The school has 1,700 pupils, including just under 350 in the sixth form.

In a statement, the school’s headteacher Neil Spurdell, said: “One of our students confirmed on Thursday morning that she had tested positive for Covid-19.

"We immediately contacted Public Health England and Wiltshire LA, both of whom were extremely helpful.

“Whilst I fully understand this will cause anxiety amongst the school community, I can assure you all necessary steps are being taken to minimise risk to others.

“The current advice is very clear and, whilst surprising to some, outlines that only those who have been in direct contact with the student within 48 hours of the test should isolate too.

“As the student concerned had not been in school at all this week, her contact with others was minimal in the 48 hours leading up to the test. This meant that just two others within our sixth form have had to stay at home.

“We alerted both parents and staff straight away and thanks to the speediness of the advice, we managed to get this done by 9.45am."

He added: "There is understandably caution being exercised by some students and they know that if they are exhibiting any symptoms of Covid-19, they must stay away from school.

"But, in this case, I am grateful for the clarity provided by PHE that enabled us to make a decision and communicate it swiftly to all concerned."
