POLICE are investigating after a fatal crash on the westbound lane of the M4 motorway in the early hours of this morning.
The M4 to the south of Gloucestershire is likely to be closed for the entire morning after a serious crash involving four vehicles.
The accident happened between J17 for Chippenham and J18 for Bath in the early hours. All westbound lanes are closed.
Four vehicles are believed to have been involved. One person has died and a second person was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
Highways England said: “The M4 through Wiltshire could be shut until 12.00 after several vehicles were involved in a crash overnight.
“It's expected to be closed between Junction 17 at Chippenham and junction 18 at Bath until later this morning while police investigate. A diversion is in place.
“The road remains closed whilst police carry out their investigation. Diversions are in place. Please allow extra time for your journey.”
