A HOUSE in Bradford on Avon which was displaying a political poster has been vandalised with cream paint.

Police are now appealing for witnesses after a house in St Margaret's Street displaying a Liberal Democrat poster in its window was deliberately targeted.

The victim's house was targeted overnight on Sunday, December 1.

Last week Helen Belcher, Lib Dem Candidate for Chippenham said: "I utterly condemn the behaviour of the vandals. This vandalism is attempting to intimidate those who are legitimately expressing support for a mainstream political party with a real chance of winning in this area. Such vandalism should stop immediately.

“I note my fellow candidates in the Chippenham constituency have also condemned such behaviour.”

Conservative posters have also been vandalised across the county in the past couple of weeks.

Chippenham Conservative candidate Michelle Donelan said: "We have reported numerous posters to the police because they keep being ripped down within 24 hours.

"These are not funded by the tax payer but by local people who have backed my campaign and it is a gross waste of money.

"A large number of posters have been marked with swear words.

"They may only be posters but they do cost money and take time to erect in addition, some have been torn into pieces in farms fields which is a disgrace as that is their working land."

Officers investigating the criminal damage urged anyone in the area who may have seen something suspicious or may have dash cam footage to review it and get in touch.

PC Michelle Haley, from Wiltshire Police, said: "We are keeping an open mind as to the motives of this criminal damage but it is highly likely that this is because of the political poster displayed.

"Politics is a particularly divisive subject at this time but it is not acceptable to deliberately target and deface someone's property because you don't agree with their views."
