WEST Wilts Ladies secured the Wessex Division One title last Saturday when they ran in a magnificent seven goals without reply to sweep past Chippenham 3rd.
Knowing there was a lot riding on the match, Wilts took a while to settle, however, a goal from Sharna Crowe calmed their nerves.
George Garrity and Millie Cornish then worked well together to get the ball back into the D, where Lauren Trim was able to make it 2-0.
Katie Gibson, Ellie Spurrier and Kirsty Kenyon worked hard in defence, transferring the ball wide for Livie Evans, who sent in a perfect pass for Trim to put Wilts three goals to the good at the break.
Rosie Vallis and Hannah Cornish put pressure on the Chippenham defence at the start of the second half and Jess McLean finished off two short corners in quick succession.
Evans then got in on the act with a late double to round off the scoring and secure Wilts the title with three games to spare.
Meanwhile, West Wilts men’s team kept their own promotion hopes in Conference North alive when they hit Hereford for six en route to a 6-2 success at Kingdown School.
The home side started aggressively in the penultimate game of the season and stormed into a 2-0 lead, with Will Janes twice converting from short corners.
Despite many more opportunities to extend their lead, progress halted and the away team were able to pull a goal back against the run of play.
Wilts used half-time to regain composure and began the second period with a well-worked goal, as the midfield and forwards linked up for Craig Killminsters to net.
The hosts’ high-press strategy left them open to the counter-attack and Hereford were able to pull another goal back.
However, Wilts did not panic and stuck to their game plan and Killminster struck three more times in the closing stages to wrap up a convincing win.
Wilts now need to beat second-placed Team Bath Buccs by three or more goals in Saturday’s final game of the season to climb above them and secure promotion.
