Staverton Halt 4 Then and Now
We take another look of Staverton Halt with a rare pic, thanks to Mike Osborne, of a steam excursion travelling through Staverton in 1963on a promotional trip.
This was a rare event as engines of this type rarely strayed from main line route.
The railway decline reached a peak in the 1960s with Dr Beeching called in to save money and close down some of the rail network. One of the casualties of the Becching Axe was the closure of the branch line that ran through Staverton which was closed to passenger traffic in April 1966.
Staverton no longer had its own station and the era of rail travel from the village came to an end after 60 years Now the line is reduced to a single track and becomes a diversionary route when adjoining lines on the network are taken out of use for essential maintenance. And used for the Trowbridge to Swindon service.
