Staverton Halt 2 Then and Now
We learnt last week that Staverton has its own railway station but termed a Halt
As the village moved into the 20th century the railway was being used more and more not only for passenger transport but also freight
Staverton Halt, opened in 1906, soon became popular with travellers and over the following decades was used by hundreds of villagers.
Most villagers used the railway between the wars to get to work or shopping trips and during weekends and Bank Holidays many took the train for days out at seaside resorts such as Weston Super Mare and Weymouth.
In the years following the end of the second World War passenger use declined mainly due to the more convenient regular bus service that were beginning to serve the community.
