A jumble sale raised £800 for Stepping Stones as part of the Times’ Give Us a Chance appeal on Saturday.
About 150 people attended the event, which took place at Longfield Community Centre, in Trowbridge.
The fundraising campaign launched in February when the charity, which serves west Wiltshire children with learning difficulties and disabilities, lost £10,000 of funding from Wiltshire Council after central government withdrew its Aiming High For Disabled Children grants. So far, the appeal has raised £11,436.
Teresa Blake, Stepping Stones’ communications co-ordinator, said: “It was really, really successful. We weren’t starting until 2pm but we had people queuing at 1pm when we were setting up.
The amount we raised is about double what we were expecting.
“We’d like to say a massive thank you to everyone who donated toys, books, clothes or baked cakes along with those who attended as the day was another massive boost to Stepping Stones.”
Following the success of the campaign the charity has set up a fundraising committee and the group is now planning its next big event – a family fun day taking place at Longmeadow Primary School on July 5.
There will be live bands performing, children’s rides and craft stalls running along with a memorabilia auction for which the charity needs donations For more about Stepping Stones or to donate call 01225 350004 or barbara@steppingstones.plus.com.
