Bomb disposal experts were called to a Trowbridge building site this morning, after a six-inch military shell was uncovered.

Builders at the Persimmon homes development in Castle Mead discovered the shell, which they described as looking like a "very large bullet", at 10.25am.

It was identified as an aircraft solid shot, measuring six inches long by three inches wide.

Police and MOD experts were called to the scene, with the item safely removed by 1pm.

Trowbridge Sergeant Jim Suter said: "It was the tip which was discovered, so the exlosive part wasn't there and there was no likelihood of it exploding.

"Nobody was evacuated as it was on a building site, and there were no nearby homes."
