Fundraisers young and old went Sport Relief crazy this week.

Sport Relief is a biennial charity event in aid of vulnerable people in both the UK and the world’s poorest countries and Trowbridge Park saw 220 fun runners doing their bit on Sunday in the Sport Relief Mile events.

Participants took part in one, three or six-mile circuits, with Active Trowbridge, the town’s park club and Avon Valley Runners organising the activities, while a DJ performed in the park’s bandstand.

Children from Mead Primary School’s Hilperton site dressed as their sporting heroes and welcomed silver Olympic medallist Sharron Davies to their Sport Relief activities. The pupils took part in a relay race and hurdles with funds from the day still being tallied.

Melksham Oak School raised £1,133.95 through their Sport Relief activities, with staff donning fancy dress for a four-legged race, sixth formers and staff cycling around 100 miles on an exercise bike and students wearing non-uniform.

Horningsham Primary pupils ran the mile-long drive of Longleat House dressed as Shakespearean characters to celebrate the Bard’s 450th birthday for Sport Relief. To coincide with Shakespeare week, the school held special activities throughout last week, ending with the sponsored run.

Newtown Primary School and Westbury Infants School raised £450 and £170 respectively from their Sport Relief Miles, with Westbury’s reception pupils also doing a Big Toddle event for Barnardo’s.

Matravers School has already raised over £1,000 for Sports Relief, after the school split into two teams, Spots and Stripes, to compete for points in sporting challenges throughout last week.

The school also held a bake off and Strictly Come Sport Relief, which involved six staff couples dancing to live music, as well as mass musical chairs, the flappy bird challenge, crossbar challenge and the Sport Relief Mile.

Pupils at Westbury Junior School had sore backsides on Friday, after beating Alan Shearer and Robbie Savage’s challenge and sitting on almost 140,000 chairs on rotation during the day. Former footballers Shearer and Savage sat on 45,000 seats each in Wembley Stadium over five days. Children at the school surpassed the 90,000 target to raise cash for Sport Relief.

Elsewhere, pupils and staff at Westbury Leigh Primary School held a mini Olympics, children at Shaw and Whitley Pre-School dressed in red, decorated cakes and took part in an obstacle course, and Oasis Academy Longmeadow raised £200 from a Sport Relief Mile and fun aerobics sessions.

Chapmanslade Primary pupils dressed up to run their mile, while children at Wylye Valley School donned onesies.

Sainsbury’s also got in on the action by holding a swimathon at Bradford on Avon pool over the weekend and an in-store 100k static bike challenge, with Bath’s former Irish international scrum-half Peter Stringer taking part on behalf of his sponsors, Protocol.
