Wiltshire Council, to their credit, has frozen council tax for 2014/5. The emergency services are managing with a two per cent increase. What of Bradford on Avon Council? They are increasing their impost by 12 per cent.
Why? They say the government has forced them into it, by withdrawing grants the town previously received. There was an alternative, though. They could have done what those of us on static or declining real incomes have had to do. They could have cut their coat according to their cloth and reduced their spending.
No doubt they think that what they spend the town’s tax take on is terribly important and couldn’t possibly be done without. Others may conclude Bradford on Avon’s town council either lack the rigour to impose financial discipline, or that they are simply too attached to spending other people’s money.
