I was saddened to read in last week’s Wiltshire Times of 11 Trowbridge Town Councillors boycotting the Mayor’s Civic Dinner. It seems that they took offence at having to pay for their spouses to attend the dinner.
My wife and I were privileged to attend the evening which we found most enjoyable. We were quite happy to pay the £25 per head in the knowledge that the profits from the evening were to go to the Mayor’s two charities. Presumably the boycotting councillors either could not afford to pay the £25 or more likely felt that they were entitled to a ‘freebie’ – there does seem to be a culture of this these days.
I presume that the three councillors who ate at Bruschetta had free meals there. However, if they paid for their meals then their actions seem ridiculous and petty. What point could they possibly be making?
It seems that those who boycotted the meal were not missed as the hall was full. However, as elected representatives they should be ashamed at the pettiness of their actions.
