Great British Bake Off judge Mary Berry, recently named Oldie of the Year, has backed Bath Cancer Unit Support Group’s £1.2million Positron Scanner Appeal, and recently visited the cancer unit at the Royal United Hospital.

Mary, who was brought up in Bath, is committed to ensuring that the RUH is able to help cancer patients through having the latest equipment as are the members of the Trowbridge branch of the Bath Cancer Unit Support Group.

Having a Positron scanner at the RUH will not only greatly enhance the treatment of certain cancers but will mean patients no longer have to travel to Cheltenham for such scans.

Doctor Richard Graham, consultant radiologist at the RUH, says the Positron is “a revolutionary type of scan which can have a significant effect on patients’ treatments.” Statistics show that following Positron scans a third of treatments are modified.

Since BCUSG was founded in 1985, over £3.27 million has been raised and spent on providing a range of facilities for cancer patients at the RUH.

The charity continues to be run only by volunteers, so a very high proportion of the funds which are raised are spent on improving facilities.
