Trowbridge Area Board gave away over £39,000 to good causes last week, with Holy Trinity Church’s war memorial one of those benefiting from the grants.
The Trowbridge and District White Ensign Association is overseeing the project to repair the cross and received £5,000 towards the work. The group also hope to gain funding from the War Memorials Trust.
Work will include cleaning the structure and its names, straightening it and repairing a crack in the cross. The group would also like to work with Trowbridge in Bloom to put a small rose garden around the Grade II listed memorial and have it rededicated.
Wiltshire and Trowbridge Town Councillor Graham Payne, the association’s secretary, said: “We feel this is something that needed to be done and given that this year is the centenary of the First World War it is the perfect time to do it.”
Other recipients of grants are Hope Nature Centre, who received £5,000 towards buying CCTV; St John’s Church, in Upper Studley, was given £5,000 for roof repairs and Longmeadow Community Centre received £5,000 for toilet refurbishment.
Relate Mid Wiltshire were given £3,000, Trowbridge Town Team received £4,000 to help set up a teenage market and entrepreneur programme and Larkrise School £2,855 for a sensory project.
