Westbury Junior School’s attempt to match Alan Shearer and Robbie Savage’s backside challenge is just one of the many events taking place in schools and businesses across the county today in aid of Sport Relief.

Former footballers Shearer and Savage completed their head-to-head challenge to be the first to sit on half the seats in Wembley Stadium over five days last Friday, sitting on 45,000 seats each.

Pupils at Westbury Junior School will try to equal that by sitting on 90,000 chairs throughout the school day, with each class having a 15-minute slot to sit on as many chairs as they can.

Headteacher Richard Hatt said: “We have a room set up with a circuit of 40 chairs and each class in the school is going to have 15 minutes to sit on as many seats as they can during their time slot.

“It’s quite a big challenge, but we have worked out that if every child can sit on 300 chairs then we should be able to match the 90,000.

“The children will be getting sponsored and hopefully we can raise lots for Sports Relief.”

Matravers School is going for its biggest ever fundraising total for Sport Relief, with the school split into two teams and competing for points in sporting challenges held throughout the day.

Events will include mass musical chairs, the flappy bird challenge and the crossbar challenge, before culminating in the Sport Relief Mile, with pupils donating money to Sport Relief to attempt the challenges.

The school will also be holding its own Sport Relief Bake Off event and Strictly Come Sport Relief, which will see six staff couples dancing to live music and competing to be crowned champion.

Teacher Louise Taylor, who is organising the school’s events, said: “We were one of the highest fundraising schools in 2012 and this year we are going all out to beat the total and raise awareness of the benefits that a sporting lifestyle can offer.”

Elsewhere, Horningsham Primary School pupils are running the mile-ong drive of Longleat House dressed as characters from Shakespeare’s work to celebrate his 450th birthday.

Pupils at Kingdown School, Newtown Primary School, Westwood with Iford Primary School and Fitzmaurice Primary School will also be getting in on the fun by running the Sport Relief Mile.

Meanwhile, Sainsbury’s is holding a swimathon at Bradford on Avon pool today until Sunday, with those taking part able to choose from 1.5km, 2.5km or 5km individual distances or 1.5km and 5km tea distances.

The fundraising will continue at Sainsbury’s Bradford on Avon store where neighbouring businesses SLR Consulting, BodyTech Gym and VW Audi will be taking to static bikes in the store to cycle 100km.
