Regarding the proposal to bring a World War I replica tank to Trowbridge Park: I can still remember the original tank which was situated in what was then a dismal and little used part of the park, almost adjacent to some antiquated men’s toilets which led down steps to the Market Yard. This was somewhere in the region of the present day children’s play area and I don’t recall that its loss was greatly mourned.
However commendable, I nevertheless feel that with an estimated cost of £250,000 the money could be be more wisely used, and would agree with Councillor Bryant that the grounds of Courtfield House, with the impending move of the museum, might be more appropriate.
Even without the tank it may be that a part of the gardens could be set aside as a place for permanent and temporary exhibits. An entrance could be made into the park, and this would be of more lasting benefit, serving as a continual reminder to future generations of Trowbridge during both World Wars.
