A holocaust survivor told pupils at Matravers School in Westbury of the terror and hardship his family suffered at the hands of the Nazis.

Pupils from Year 9, 10, 11 and 12 were privileged to hear Rudi Oppenheim-er’s harrowing account last Friday, which was organised through the Holocaust Education Trust.

Mr Oppenheimer’s family left Berlin in 1936 to escape Nazi persecution, but in June 1943 Hitler’s army poured into Amsterdam – where the Oppenheimer’s had escaped to. After seven months in a transit camp, they were sent to the notorious Bergen-Belsen death camp in Germany.

Headteacher Simon Riding said: “I was immen-sely proud of how our students responded to such a powerful and challenging presentation.”
