Beavers in Southwick face an unhappy new year, unless a new leader can be found so they can re-open after the Christmas break.

The village’s Beaver colony is full with 22 boys, aged between six and eight, and the group also has a long waiting list.

But unless a new leader comes forward, meetings in January will have to be postponed and the Beavers will have to wait to move on to Cubs when they are old enough.

Ted Pomeroy, group scout leader for the village’s Scouts, said: “It is a great shame. “The leader did give us notice that she would be going, and although we have three asssistant leaders, for various very good reasons none of them can take on the top job.

“We can provide all the training, and the assistants will help someone settle in, but we have to find someone who will take on being in overall charge of the group.”

The Beavers meet on Friday evenings in the Scout HQ on Frome Road.

“The meeting night must stay as Friday, as the HQ is booked every other venue for pic storynight,” said Mr Pomeroy. “But the current 5pm time could be adjusted to suit whoever takes on the job.

“Anyone, male or female, of any age, can take on the role. It would be nice to find a younger person but there is no age limit.”
