Plans to build 102 houses and apartments in Station Road, Westbury, have been approved by Wiltshire Council.

The application from Persimmon Homes concerns land bordering the railway and Station Road at Westbury North Junction.

It was opposed by Westbury Town Council on the grounds of being an overdevelopment when it was first submitted in 2010.

The developer resubmitting the application, but the town council continued to raise concerns about the plans, including the ground level of the far eastern site being significantly higher than the land in Paxmans Road.

However, the planning application has now been approved, after the Section 106 agreement was finalised between the council and the developers.

The agreement sets out the money that Persimmon must pay towards improved community facilities for the surrounding area.

Westbury town councillor Russell Hawker said: “We have known about that application for a few years. When we first considered it, we rejected it because of the high density.

“There was also an issue brought to our attention by residents that there would be a difference in the ground level between the homes in Paxmans Road that would back on to the proposed development.

“It will be interesting to see now, when Persimmon will start the building work.

“I’m not too worried about the complications, as they will have to comply with the building regulations.

“Other than the high density, I have got no real issue with the development. Westbury does need a continuing supply of new housing, as it is a growing town.

“It will also be good for the local economy and there is certainly the demand.”
