Neighbours on the Longfield Estate in Trowbridge have rallied around to help elderly residents of a bungalow complex that caught fire on Saturday.

Five people were evacuated from the sheltered housing in Weavers Drive after a fire in the bungalow of warden Roy Lovelock destroyed his home, claimed the life of his dog, and caused damage to the bungalow of June White, 79, who lives next door.

Mrs White, a grandmother of seven, spent the night at her granddaughter’s in Hilperton. But daughter Janet also discovered her television had been stolen when she returned the next morning to inspect the damage.

Her daughter said: “She only moved in three weeks ago. She had just got everything unpacked. We just think how could someone do that when they know it is an old people’s complex and the house has been on fire.”

Granddaughter Hayley Oakley-Westlake said the family had been inundated with offers of TVs. She added: “We hope the police catch the person that has done this because we don’t want that sort of person around Weavers Drive.”

The local community has been quick to respond and people from across the estate held a meeting on Tuesday night to help raise money for Mr Lovelock and the affected residents.

James McDonald, chairman of Longmeadow Tenants and Residents Association, said: “I am very pleased with the response. People are willing to put forward ideas and go out and help. If we can help those affected, it will be a good thing.”

A bingo night will be held on December 14, the time and location to be decided, and the community will provide and serve a Christmas meal, which Mr Lovelock had planned for the residents of the complex, on December 20 at Longfield Community Hall.
