Melksham man Richard Newton has pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of his wife, Suzanne, whose body was discovered at their Bowerhill home earlier this year.

Mrs Newton, 45, who was employed by Calne-based recruitment agency Darren Guinness Associates, was found dead at the couple's home in Barnes Wallis Close on Sunday, January 13, and the 52-year-old was originally charged with her murder.

But at Bristol Crown Court yesterday, the charge of manslaughter was entered and accepted on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

Newton will return to Bristol Crown Court on Friday, December 13 for sentencing.

After the discovery of his wife's body, Newton was arrested the following day in Devon after a concerted police search.

His car, a blue Volkswagen Polo, was found unattended at Brendon Common, Exmoor on the Sunday and after the search spread south, he was arrested in Dulverton and taken to Taunton Police Station.

He was later taken to Taunton Hospital to receive treatment for injuries before being transferred back to Melksham Police Station for interview.
