A man who violently beat a woman in a 'humiliating' assault after he had raped her has been jailed for five years.

Dariusz Luniak got his victim to kneel down so he could whip her with a piece of tubing from the back of a washing machine following the sex attack.

The 26-year-old then left the woman fearing she was going to die as she struggled to breathe when he put his hands round her neck and started to throttle her.

Luniak was high on drink and drugs when he carried out the brutal attack on the woman in her own home.

Claire Marlow, prosecuting, told Swindon Crown Court on Friday that  the incident took place in the early hours of Friday, February 22.

The defendant had been out drinking and taking drugs with friends when he went back to the victim's house at about 4am.

Attacking her in the bedroom, he forced her on to all fours where he made her perform a sex act on him.

She managed to get him to stop but he grabbed her and threatened to lock her in her wardrobe and kill her if she didn't stop making a noise.

Luniak then dragged her downstairs by her hair, got her to kneel with a tea towel in her mouth where he inflicted the beating with the length of plastic hose.

When she got away he followed her to the bedroom where he grabbed her round the neck and squeezed, leaving her fearing she was about to die.

Breaking free, she then called for help on her mobile, bringing the terrifying ordeal to an end.

Luniak, of Park Street, Trowbridge, pleaded guilty to rape and actual bodily harm.

Marcus Davey said his client, who had a traumatic upbringing, had been undergoing a breakdown of sorts at the time of the incident.

"He had a very unhappy and traumatic childhood" he told the court. "He received very significant beatings as a child and witnessed very significant beatings by his father on his mother.

Mr Davey said he sought to escape in drugs from the age of 12 and also said Luniak had carried out serious self-harm and attempted suicide last year.

Passing sentence, Judge Euan Ambrose said: "These beatings caused considerable wheals to her legs, arms and back.

"Your actions were designed not just to inflict injury but also, in my view, significant humiliation."

He jailed him for five years and told him he must register as a sex offender for life.
