A dog was found dead in the fire-ravaged home of an elderly people's warden-controlled complex in Trowbridge tonight.

The blaze started at around 5.15pm in Number 2, Carders Corner, off Weavers Drive, the home of the warden who looks after the sheltered, terraced bungalows.

He has yet to be located, but his car is not at the property so it is assumed he is out. The dog was found at this property.

The blaze spread to Number 4, and there is water damage from the effort to quell the flames in Number 6.

Residents of Numbers 4 and 6 have gone to relatives, while those living in Numbers 8 and 10 have been allowed to return home.

At the height of the fire there were six crews on the scene plus a hydraulic platform and a HART team, a hazard area response unit, to help with assessing the safety of the building.

The Fire and Rescue Service are liaising with Police, Ambulance and Red Cross colleagues. A new arrangement with the Plymouth Brethren for the provision of food for firefighters has been used at the incident.
