The inquest into the death of a boy at Bristol Children’s Hospital just weeks after the death of Sean Turner started at Flax Bourton Coroner’s Court, near Bristol, on Monday.
Luke Jenkins, seven, of Cardiff, died in a similar way to the four-year-old son of Warminster couple Yolanda and Steve Turner on the same ward at the hospital.
Sean died in March last year, six weeks after corrective surgery for a congenital heart condition.
Luke died just weeks later in April after surgery to correct a heart complaint he had suffered from since birth.
The Turners were at the court to hear evidence by doctors who will be involved in their son’s inquest.
The parents of both boys believe their sons died because they did not get appropriate care after surgery.
Mrs Turner said: “We feel that the inquest is going well and that the things coming out are what need to come out. Hopefully, Luke’s parents will get the truth.
“One surgeon involved in Luke’s case, Dr Andrew Parry, was also involved in Sean’s operation and we heard his account and he got emotional towards the end, but I’m not convinced.”
The inquest heard that Luke’s parents believed Dr Parry would lead the operation, but instead he assisted consultant cardiac surgeon Serban Stoicha.
A report by investigators at University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust after Luke’s death said staff shortages were partly to blame for the tragedy.
Mrs Turner added: “Some of the stuff that has come out reflects badly on the hospital, but it all depends on what the coroner thinks.”
The inquest continues and should finish next Thursday. The inquest into the death of Sean starts on January 14.
