I welcome the news that Wiltshire Council is to investigate a possible supermarket levy across the county. The council has decided that the council’s scrutiny committee should look at the levy, and report back next year. This is the best committee for this to be looked at. This shouldn’t be political, it’s just about getting the best deal for retailers and residents of Wiltshire.
Both myself and Cllr Jeff Osborn are suggesting that the 8.5 per cent levy be ploughed back into reducing parking charges in our town centres, however the scrutiny committee may decide that the money be better spent. I have an open mind, just as long as it’s invested back into our town centres and to the benefit of small retailers and residents.
Cllr Terry Chivers, Independent Melksham Without North, Eden Grove, Whitley.
