There was an unprecedented turnout at Warminster Town Council’s planning meeting on Monday, as the town voiced its opposition to a plan for 60 homes near Dorothy Walk.
The proposals, which include the development of 60 homes at land off Bath Road and Church Street, were submitted to Wiltshire Council by Redrow Homes South West.
After condemning the plans during an exhibition held in May, nearly 100 residents packed the meeting to show their opposition to the development, which many believe would destroy Dorothy Walk.
A petition of 643 signatures, in opposition to the plan, was also handed in.
Redrow Homes’ application, which was registered by Wiltshire Council at the start of October, includes a range of properties from one-bedroom apartments to four-bedroom houses.
At the meeting Katrina Stevens, of Dorothy Walk, said: “This development is not included in the emerging Core Strategy. It is not wanted by the local people and the town does not need this development.”
Concerns raised at the meeting included the possibility of flooding, an increase in traffic and possible environmental damage.
Richard Hayes, chairman of Warminster Civic Trust, said: “Warminster Civic Trust is totally opposed to the application.
“It is unsustainable and it is not being done with the best interests of Warminster in mind.”
The planning advisory committee backed the representations made by residents and the campaign group, Save Dorothy Walk, and voted unanimously for refusal of the plans.
After the meeting, Cllr Paul Macdonald said: “The strength of public opinion is now unchallengeable and the totally united front that has formed amongst the councillors sends a clear message to developers.”
