Trowbridge Town Council wants to install high-powered lighting in the town’s park to improve safety for people at night.
The £40,000 project will see LED lights put into Trowbridge Park.
The town council has received a grant of £22,000 from Wiltshire and Swindon Anti-Social Behaviour Reduction group towards the scheme.
It has also applied for a grant from Wiltshire and Police and Crime Commissioner for Wiltshire and Swindon Angus Macpherson’s £1m innovation fund.
Bill Austin, the town council’s head of direct services, said: “If people can see bright open spaces that perception of fear is reduced and we believe this will be of benefit to those visiting the park during the evening.”
In July, the town council took control of Trowbridge Park from Wiltshire Council and cut down some trees to improve visibility.
Mr Austin anticipated that the park would have more and more visitors following the opening of Trowbridge’s new cinema, last Friday, at the nearby St Stephen’s Place Leisure Park.
The town council plans to host more live music events at park’s bandstand which has suffered some graffiti and anti-social behaviour, and is working with Wiltshire Police to bring this to an end.
Police plan to step up patrols in Trowbridge Park.
Anyone with information about the graffiti can call Wiltshire Police on 101.
