In response to Help Save High Street: may I ask the two councillors who are proposing this, if this campaign is implemented how do they expect it to be funded?
My logical conclusion is that if the supermarkets are taxed to foot the bill they will increase their prices that will be passed on to their customers (who do not want to shop in the High Street), some who can ill afford to feed their families now.
The statement that supermarkets put back very little into local communities is a bit rich. What about the number of locals that they employ, free parking and choice of shopping etc. I remember as a boy that shopping in the High Street meant that you went to the butchers for your meat, the bakers for bread, the grocers for provisions and so on. Now it can all be got under one roof.
I recommend that both the council and the general public ignore these two councillors and let them live in the past if they wish.
