ORGANISERS of two Trowbridge events in aid of the town’s Polish community want to build on their success.
Representatives from Wiltshire Police, Wiltshire Council, Trow-bridge’s Polish Club and the Citizens Advice Bureau held stalls at the events, which took place at the Civic Centre on Monday, and County Hall last Wednesday.
The aim of the events was to promote the inclusion of Polish people in everyday Trowbridge life.
Trowbridge Community Area Future were given a grant of £7,500 from Angus Macpherson, Wiltshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner, to run the information days. Tracy Sullivan, of Trowbridge Community Area Future, said: “It has allowed the Polish community to network and discover what is out there for them.”
As part of the project, a directory of services is being produced in Polish and English.
During both events, bilingual volunteers were signed up to be part of an interpreter scheme.
One of their main roles will be to help in communications between parents and schools.
The money to stage the events came from Mr Macpherson’s £1m innovation fund which aims to help community projects.
He said: “I’m delighted to see this come to fruition as there’s been a lot of effort put into it. I’ve enjoyed meeting all the groups and stallholders. I think the model for this project could be taken forward to aid other communities in Wiltshire and Swindon.”
Wiltshire Police inspector Lisette Harvey, based at Trowbridge Police Station, said she felt the events had been of great benefit and will help develop relationships.
She said: “It was a seed of an idea which has progressed massively. I’m very proud of everyone who has been involved in staging this event.”
