JOBSEEKERS in west Wiltshire have been given a fireman’s lift this week, as part of a scheme to develop their practical skills.

Ten unemployed people will complete the Salamander course at Trowbridge Fire Station today, working with firefighters to gain team-building, first aid and confidence-building skills.

Firefighter Jon Salisbury, who helped run the 10-day course, said: “On the first day, we went out with the fire kit, then started drilling with the pumps and ladders. Then we went into the smoke house, in the training centre in Devizes, where they were searching for casualties in a pitch black fire simulation.

“They’ve also done two half days of health and safety training for the level two certificate, and a first aid course, so it’s qualifications on their CV.
“We’ve got firms coming, when we’ll get the fire engines in to show off all they’ve done. We’re hoping it can help build their confidence and make them feel more employable.

“People get that stigma of being unemployed and we want businesses to not write people off. They want to work and here is the proof.”

Ashley Nossiter, 18, of Trowbridge, was recommended for the course by the Job Centre, after looking for work for a year.

He said: “It was great abseiling down the tower; it was a bit windy, but not too bad. I am thinking of becoming a retained firefighter, so it’s been worth it.”

Olivia Jane Wafer, 19, also of Trowbridge, said: “It’s taught me some vital skills and I’ve gained a first aid qualification.”
