Organisers of Warminster Carnival are delighted that a last-minute appeal for volunteers to marshal tomorrow night has been answered.

Led by the Warminster Lions float, the carnival will have nearly 70 entries, including majorettes’ groups, which would make it the biggest ever. But there were fears that there were not enough volunteers.

Sandra Major, who chairs the carnival committee, had said: “We are struggling a little bit with getting volunteers to help out as marshals at road junctions.

“We need as many volunteers to help out with the marshalling and fundraising as possible.”

The appeal, published on the Wiltshire Times’ website, led to Wessex 4X4 Response team offering its services.

A statement from the carnival committee yesterday said: “The organisers of Warminster Carnival would like to send out a huge thank you to the Wessex 4X4 Response team who have come forward following the appeal.

“Sandra Major has been inundated with phone calls from the team and other individuals, who all wanted to support her efforts. Thanks also go to all the organisations that helped publicise the appeal so widely and enabled us to achieve such a successful outcome.”

Floats will follow the usual route, setting off from Boreham Road at 6.30pm and going through East Street, Market Place and Silver Street before ending in Church Street, by the Minster Church.

Volunteers will meet at Warminster Park Community Centre at 5pm, for a briefing and refreshments, before taking up positions at 6pm. They will be on duty until 9pm.

Mrs Major said: “It is set to be a fantastic carnival, as long as the weather holds out for us, and I’m looking forward to seeing what floats we have this year.”
