I write further to your article on Warminster Vintage Bus Running Day and, having seen this event recorded in your pages year upon year, a friend and I decided not to miss it this year. And what a treat we had!

Incredibly, the day started by actually being picked up by an advertised feeder service at the bus stop at the bottom of College Road, by an elderly Bristol as it was on its way to the event.

This vehicle had been lovingly restored to pristine condition, as had all the other buses and coaches taking part, as we found out as the day progressed.

Our timetable showed such a breathtaking choice of journeys that may be taken by the waiting line-up of vehicles – many from my childhood (I am 67) – that we just joined the queue of the one we liked the look of best.

Thus we visited Chitterne, Horningsham, Codford, Frome ... and all places in between.

However, my main reason in writing is to pay tribute to the owners of these splendid vehicles, as well as the organisers of the event.

All the journeys were free and the timetable a mere £6; the proceeds of which, I understand, will be given to charity, so no profit.

Restoration would have been costly and the high standard of moquette and leatherette in the reupholstered seating must have cost a staggering sum, added to which is insurance, etc, and not least fuel; most of these beauties mustering no more than 9 mpg, even less for the petrol engined ones.

So, all-in-all a super – albeit rainy – day. We got wet; very wet. But that didn’t spoil our enjoyment. My grateful thanks to owners and organisers. I look forward to the next one.
