I have read Mike Baxter’s letter concerning the opening of the new Odeon Cinema in Trowbridge (Wiltshire Times October 18) and agree with all his points, apart from his concerns about car parking.

In addition to the 100+ spaces within the St Stephen’s Place development, the adjacent multi-storey car park has hundreds of spaces, free and with no time restriction after 6pm when St Stephen’s Place will be at its busiest.

Just across the road, the Castle Street car park is free in the evenings, while a few steps over the river there is acres of free parking at County Hall, publicly available in the evenings and all weekend.

It is worth emphasising the word “free”, because this gives the cinema the edge over others nearby; particularly the Odeon in Bath, where all nearby parking has to be paid for.

It potentially increases the cinema’s catchment area even more than Mr Baxter suggests and makes the future of St Stephen’s Place all the brighter.

Thank you to everyone whose work has brought the cinema into being and best wishes to the manager and his team.

I look forward to my first visit, sooner rather than later.
