Dorothy House Hospice marked the start of building two new community lodges by cutting the first sod last week.
The Winsley hospice was awarded a £462,497 grant from the Department of Health to contribute towards the single-storey lodges, which will provide a home-from-home environment for patients and their families.
Representatives from Halsall Construction Ltd, which has been appointed to run the project, joined chief executive Liz Brown and staff to watch trustee Fiona Cook break the turf.
The self-catering lodges will consist of two bedrooms, two bathrooms and an open-plan lounge and kitchen diner room.
They are expected to be completed by March 2014.
