Brian Douglas (Doug) Taylor, 75, who for many years ran a poultry unit which provided eggs to businesses and customers across a wide area from his Hilmarton base, died recently at the Great Western Hospital, Swindon.

He had received long periods of treatment for various health problems. For the last couple of years ago he had lived in residential care in Chippenham, where he made many friends.

He took trouble to know the names of everyone who looked after him, whether in the care home or hospital, and always addressed them by name.

Mr Taylor was the youngest of Harold and Ethel Taylor’s three sons. In his youth, he was a member of the Air Training Corps, and some thought that he would seek a career in the RAF.

However, he opted to continue the family’s farming tradition, and set up his own poultry unit.

His cousin, David, said: “He was very reliable, and formed deep friendships with many of his customers, who held him in high regard. He always worked excessively long hours in his business.

“He offered opportunities for many local young people to earn money by collecting and packing eggs after school, and any of them who shared his great passion for football would be offered transport to the County Ground and also to some away games. He had a season ticket at Swindon Town for many years and had a wide knowledge of other football clubs and their players.”

The Rev Alison Way, who officiated at his funeral at St Laurence Church, Hilmarton, , mentioned Mr Taylor’s love of motor sport, zest for speed and various mishaps.

His cousin David added: “He was a very generous man, and contributed quietly to various good causes. He is remembered very fondly.”
