A few lines about Southwick Country Park, along the Frome Road in Trowbridge. I’ve quoted the Frome Road address as, believe it or not, when I tell people what a lovely place it is to visit, they quite often say “Where’s the country park?” They don’t know what they are missing.
There are wonderful country walks and a hard track which runs around the park, so it is suitable for pushchairs, disability scooters and more friendly underfoot for those who are unsteady on their feet. A good walking stick and you’re off! You constantly see parents with their pushchairs and prams giving their children wonderful fresh air walks and informing them of all the beauty around them.
The wild flowers through the seasons are wonderful – clover, buttercups, species of grass by the dozen, bushes and trees galore, a big pond and brooks with bugs, tadpoles and other water-loving inhabitants.
The Hope Nature Centre runs a super cafe called Squirrels Cafe, with toilets and baby changing facilities, outside seating, dog parking spaces and a wonderful animal park.
Autumn is here and the colours are showing on the trees and hedges so the park is a wonderful place to go, with seats to rest on when you feel the need, and plenty of poo bins if you are a dog walker (and please use them).
I have been walking there since it was first opened and I am a Friend of the park. We have volunteers who do a wonderful job clearing out brooks, ponds and ditches, mending, pruning etc. The grass cutting by a local farmer has just finished and the fields and pathways look grand.
So, take some deep breaths, look around, speak to other people walking, have a cup of tea and you will feel a “satisfied with life” person. There is so much to see and I hope to see a lot more new faces around.
Don’t forget to read the notice board.
Telephone numbers are there if you wish to have more information, eg how to become a Friend or a volunteer, or both. We need you.
