The most recent winners of the West Wiltshire Scouts’ contest for the Maurice Gullis trophy, members of the 1st Trowbridge unit, were delighted to see the Times’ Nostalgia article last week about the trophy winners from 70 years ago.
“The challenge dates back to 1926, when a cup was donated in memory of Maurice Gullis, a scout from Melksham who died on April 1 that year, and who is rememberd on a plaque on a pew in Melksham Church.
“The competition, between all the troops in West Wiltshire, aims to help maintain the traditional values of scouting through tests in camping, backwoods cooking, pioneering projects etc, and has continued to the present day, the latest competition being held last month at the Tedbury campsite in Frome,” said assistant district commissioner Brian Fitchett.
The 2013 winners were a 1st Trowbridge patrol led by Charlotte Fortune, with members Will Stacey, Ollie Cole, Niall Thorne, Tom Blake-Thwaite and Sam Emery. The runners-up were an all girl scout patrol from the 6th Trowbridge troop.
