A man was injured after re-entering a burning garage to get his car in Bradford Leigh.

The victim suffered burns to his head and smoke inhalation while trying to get a vehicle from the building in Leigh Road on Tuesday.

The Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service has now issued a warning about the dangers of entering buildings which are on fire.

Four crews from Brad-ford on Avon, Trowbridge, Corsham and Melksham were called out at 11.30am, as well as an Incident Command Unit from Devizes.

Crews used four sets of breathing apparatus, two hose jets and one main jet and put the fire out in an hour, preventing it from spreading to a house attached to the garage.

The man was treated at the scene, then taken to the Royal United Hospital in Bath by ambulance, but later discharged.

The garage and a Honda car were destroyed in the fire, but it is believed a Jaguar was rescued.

Kathy Collis, the station manager at Trowbridge, said: “We believe it was caused by garden equipment inside the garage.

“We have not been able to do a full investigation yet, because there is asbestos in the garage roof. That will have to be disposed of properly.

“Once a fire has been discovered in a property, people should get out, stay out and call the fire services and not return for any pets or personal belongings, for their own safety.”

A full investigation into the cause of the fire is still ongoing.
